We are believed by our symptoms

--

It is not that we believe in our symptoms, but rather, for those who are whatever they say they are, like Yahweh — these prosthetic gods with their gadgets , floating in the scientific discourse—it is others who believe in them: we are to be believed by our symptom.

It is for this reason that we need to overturn the popular theory that propels the joke: “I heard it works even if we don’t believe in it.” The ‘it works’ is rather the belief of the Other, in us, as a speaking-being bubbling jouissance and extending ourselves in space.
